Tom Raffin, Painter

Tom Raffin is a 5th generation San Franciscan who has enjoyed art and painting since boyhood.  Over the past two decades he has focused almost exclusively on watercolors, especially landscapes from California, Colorado, Alaska and around the world.  His technique is easily identified with its smooth washes and thickly applied bright colors. Critics have described his work as revealing both solitude and joy.  Tom was mentored by artists Dan Mendelowitz, Mark Adams, and Ben Van Hoesen.

Tom is particularly drawn to color and the interplay of controlled composition and relaxed expression. “My best paintings have a balance between tight detail of form and a broad expanse of washed color and space”.
